Welcome back! It is truly an honor to begin another year as Principal of the Dr. Michael Conti School. At PS #5 we’re excited and ready to begin the 2019-2020 school year. For the past two weeks teachers have been busy at work setting up their classrooms and preparing for that very special first day. Our goal at PS #5 is to create a learning environment where children will love coming to school and thrive academically and socially. We look forward to strengthening our school-home partnership and believe wholeheartedly that this relationship is essential to help our children succeed.

As in previous years, we’re excited to continue to promote a hands-on inquiry-based learning model through the integration of Project Based Learning. Our motto last year was “students impacting the world, one project at a time!” Through PBL students shared their voice and were empowered to fight for causes they believe in such as recycling, water conservation, reducing food waste in our school cafeteria, and many more issues, which through their projects, our students affected positive change.  Our goal will be to further develop essential critical-thinking and problem solving skills through an increased focus on STEM based learning, and we will be working through the year to refashion our current science lab into a 21st  century STEM lab that will promote curiosity and innovation.

Promoting the academic, social, emotional development and physical safety of our students is of utmost importance, and in light of this, the JCPS will be installing metal detectors in all the district schools. In the near future, all visitors entering the building via the main entrance by the security desk will be screened through a metal detector and/or wand. As an additional safety measure, all students in grades 5-8 will be screened through a metal detector right inside Exit 6. Students in these grade levels will also undergo daily backpack searches as they enter the building. We believe these measures will add another layer of school safety and security. More information will follow.

We begin this school year with a renewed sense of commitment, passion, and excitement. We look forward to wonderful new memories we will create together for our children. We invite you on our journey and trust that through your continued support and active engagement, PS #5 will continue to be one of the premier elementary schools in Jersey City! I want to personally invite you meet the PS #5 Conti family at our Open House scheduled
